Folliculitis: Treatment, Diet and Home Remedies

Food and Nutrition

Foods to be taken
  • Drinking eight to 10 glasses of water a day can help flush disease-causing organisms from the body.
  • Try to include two to three cloves of garlic in your meals every day. Garlic has amazing antiseptic properties, and will help fight the infection.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet with plenty vitamin B and C.
  • Betel leaves and turmeric powder are also useful remedies for folliculitis.
  • Increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids by eating more fish, fortified eggs, freshly ground flax seeds or walnuts.
Foods to be avoided
  • Avoid too much of sugar, dairy, gluten, bread, pasta, rice, and alcohol.

Home Remedies

  • Apply a warm, moist wash cloth or compress to the affected area several times a day to relieve discomfort and help the area drain, if needed.
  • Try an oatmeal lotion or an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream to help soothe itchy skin.
  • Gently wash the infected skin twice a day with antibacterial soap or apply an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment. Use a clean wash cloth and towel to dry off each time you wash.
  • Avoid shaving irritated skin. If you must shave, use an electric razor rather than a blade and apply a soothing aftershave lotion when you are finished. Also, shave in the direction of hair growth rather than against it.
  • Do not share your towels or wash cloths, and launder them in plenty of hot, soapy water after every use. Wash clothes that cover the affected areas after each wearing.
