Foods to be taken
  • Eat plenty of foods that contain calcium. This is extremely important for keeping the bones strong and healthy. Dairy products are a good source of calcium. An added benefit is that dairy products reduce the body ability to absorb iron.
  • Vitamin D is needed so that the body can absorb calcium. Vitamin D is contained in eggs, dairy products and fish.
Foods to be avoided
  • Watermelon, Spinach, Apricots, Leafy greens, Asparagus, Potatoes, Dates, Raisins, Broccoli, Beans, Peas, Dried beans, Legumes
  • Excess iron
  • Cereals
  • Tea, coffee
  • Spices

Exercise regularly, ask your doctor about an exercise program right for you.

Home Remedies

  • Persons who receive significant numbers of blood transfusions need a treatment called chelation therapy to remove excess iron from the body.
  • If you receive blood transfusions, you should not take iron supplements.
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Avoid infections
