Prevention Tips
The best way to prevent whooping cough is with the pertussis vaccine, which is often given in combination with vaccines against two other serious diseases diphtheria and tetanus.- Keep your home free of irritants that can trigger coughing spells, such as aerosol sprays; tobacco smoke; and smoke from cooking, fireplaces, and wood-burning stoves
- Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing. Encourage children to do the same.
- Wash your hands properly
Watch Out
- Severe cough, which occurs in bouts of coughing
- Characteristic whooping sound on inhalation
- Vomiting at the end of a bout of coughing and dizziness
- Apnoea- the child stops breathing for periods of time and may go blue
When to See Doctor
Consult a doctor if there occurs- Severe cough with a whooping sound on inhalation
- Breathing difficulties
- Child skin or lips turn red, purple, or blue
- Cough and vomit
