Prevention Tips
- Knee pain cannot always be avoided, but good precautions include stretching, warming up and cooling down around a workout or playing sport
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Resting after strenuous exercises may also help prevent pain in the knees
- Do not smoke. Smoking slows healing because it decreases blood supply and delays tissue repair
- Stop exercising if you feel pain in your knee
Watch Out
- Swelling of the joint or the calf area
- Bluish discoloration in the calf below the sore knee
When to See Doctor
Consult a doctor if you have- Severe knee pain and that you cannot bear weight on your knee
- Fever, redness or warmth around the knee, or significant swelling
- Pain, swelling, numbness, tingling, or bluish discoloration in the calf below the sore knee
- Still have pain after 3 days of home treatment
