Molluscum contagiosum is a common viral skin disease that causes either single or multiple raised, pearl-like bumps (flesh coloured papules) on the skin. It is common in children but also affects adults. The virus affects only the outer (epithelial) layer of skin and does not circulate throughout the body.

It is a chronic infection and lesions may persist from a few months to a few years. However, most cases resolve in six to nine months.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is done by physical examination and other tests which may be ordered include:
  • Skin scrapings and microscopic examination
  • Skin biopsy
