Stye: Meaning, Diagnosis and Overview

What is Stye?

A stye, also known as hordeolum, is a small infection of the glands in the eye, located in the eyelids.  Glands around the edge of the eyelid get clogged and swell until a sore like a small pimple or boil appears. It may also be due to a blockage in a follicle of an eyelash. The infection causes a red bump on the eyelid that may look like a pimple.
Most styes form on the outside of the eyelid, some of them develop on the inside of the eyelid. There are two types of hordeola:
  • External- occurs when the infection is external to the lash line
  • Internal- occurs when the infection is inside of the lash line

Recovery Time

In the majority of cases, styes go away on their own without intervention within a week.

Diagnosis is mainly done by a simple physical examination of the eye.
