What is Pediatric GERD?

Most infants occasionally spit up throughout the day. Reflux (gastro-esophageal reflux) happens when the milk your baby has swallowed comes back up into his food pipe (oesophagus), or into his mouth.
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common condition where stomach acid leaks out of the stomach and into the oesophagus (oesophagus is a long tube of muscle than runs from the mouth to the stomach). It is also known as acid reflux disease, gastric reflux disease.

Recovery Time

Without treatment, GERD is typically a long-term problem. Symptoms may be relieved within the first day of treatment, but for many patients, several weeks of treatment are needed before symptoms lessen noticeably or go away.

Diagnosis

Diagnostic tests include:
  • X-ray
  • Barium swallow
  • 24 hour pH monitoring
  • Gastric emptying study
  • Endoscopy
