Pediatric UTI: Symptom and Causes

Symptoms

  • Fever with chills
  • Crying or another indication that urination is painful
  • Cloud, dark, bloody or fowl-smelling urine
  • Irritability
  • Vomiting
  • Flank (side between ribs and hipbone) pain or abdominal pain
  • Refusal to eat
  • Urinating often
  • Leaking urine into clothes or bedding in older children

Causes

  • Bacteria generally living in bowel cause UTIs
  • Infection of bladder (cystitis) mainly due to E. coli (a type of bacteria commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract)
  • Infection of urethra (urethritis)
  • Constipation
  • Waiting to urinate
  • Drinking fewer liquids
