Food and Nutrition

Foods to be taken
  • Potatoes (without the skin)
  • White bread
  • Chicken/fish
  • Bananas
  • Boiled rice
  • Apple
  • Toast with honey, jam or vegemite (no butter or margarine)
  • Plain Biscuits (e.g. Sao with the above spreads)
  • Boiled vegetables
  • Clear soup
  • Plain salad
  • Yogurt and cheese
  • Drink fruit juices such as orange and pomegranate juices.
  • One useful tip that may help control diarrhoea is to eat several small meals a day instead of three large ones.
Diarrhea foods

Foods to be avoided
  • Wholegrain bread
  • Vegetables including broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and beans
  • High fiber cereals (like bran flakes)
  • Nuts
  • Dried and fresh fruit
  • Caffeine (tea, coffee)
  • Greasy, fatty or fried foods (full breakfast, take-away etc.)
  • Pickled or spicy food (these can are thought to irritate the digestive tract and may induce diarrhoea)

Yoga and Exercise

Do not exercise if you experience diarrhoea, as this can worsen the risk of dehydration.

Home Remedies

  • Home-made Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) – to be taken immediately as the patient feels dehydrated due to vomiting or loose stools
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Take oral rehydration drinks- boiled rice water, daal water, green coconut water, plain salt sugar lassi.
  • Eat as soon as you feel up to it.
  • If your rectal area becomes sore because of frequent bowel movements take warm baths. Afterwards, pat the area dry (do not rub) with a clean, soft towel.
