Prevention Tips

The most important way to avoid diarrhoea is to avoid coming into contact with infectious agents that can cause it. Key measures to prevent diarrhoea include:
  • Access to safe drinking-water
  • Use of improved sanitation
  • Hand washing with soap
  • Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life
  • Good personal and food hygiene
  • Health education about how infections spread
  • Rotavirus vaccination

Watch Out

  • Blood in the stools
  • Pus in the stools
  • Pain during bowel movements
  • Repeated bouts of vomiting
  • Reduced urination
  • High fever

When to See Doctor

Consult a doctor if symptoms persist for more than a day or two, or recur frequently or if you experience serious symptoms including:
  • Blood or pus in the faeces
  • Painful passing of faeces
  • Repeated vomiting
  • Inability to drink more fluids
  • Reduced or absent urination
  • Temperature greater than 38 C
  • Fainting or convulsions
