Symptoms
- Whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples which occur on the face, neck, shoulders, back, or chest
- Cystic lesions (pimples that are large and deep). These can be painful if they get infected
- White or yellow ‘squeezable’ spots
- Large red lumps
- Picked or scratched spots
- Red marks from healed spots, mostly in fair skin
- Dark marks from old spots, mostly in dark skin
Causes
- Acne usually occurs during the teen years. This is because hormone changes make the skin more oily after puberty starts
- Use of oil-based or greasy skin products or cosmetics
- Eating chocolates and oily and high fat foods
- Genetics
- Some medications which contain lithium and androgen
- Hormonal changes during pregnancy
- Stress
