Bronchopulmonary Dysplagia: Prevention and Complications

Prevention Tips

  • Prevent premature delivery whenever possible
  • If your baby is on breathing support, ask the health care provider how soon your baby can be weaned (gradually removed) from the ventilator
  • Your baby may receive a substance called surfactant to help keep the baby’s lungs open

Watch Out

  • Pale, dusky, or blue skin color that may start around the lips or nail beds
  • Panting or grunting
  • Working much harder than usual to breathe: belly sinking in with breathing, pulling in of the skin between the ribs with each breath

When to See Doctor

Consult a doctor if you observe any of the following symptoms:
  • Faster breathing than normal
  • Growing tired or lethargic from working to breathe
  • More coughing than usual
  • Panting or grunting
  • Wheezing
  • Pale, dusky, or blue skin color that may start around the lips or nail beds
  • Trouble feeding or excess spitting up or vomiting of feedings
