Food and Nutrition

Foods to be taken
  • Fruits and veggies high in Vitamin C, like berries, oranges, lemons, peppers, papaya, cauliflower, broccoli.
  • Lots of fluids
Foods to be avoided
  • Eggs, junk food, red meat, sweets, cheese and cold foods like ice cream. Foods that are made from refined flour or contain high amounts of starch should also be avoided. 
  • Avoid dairy products since these foods have a tendency to produce more mucus in the body
  • Limit refined sugars since they create an acidic environment in the body which may cause a cold to linger             

Home Remedies

  • Over the counter saline nasal drops in the nostrils to relieve nasal congestion 
  • A cool-mist humidifier to increase air moisture
  • Petroleum jelly on the skin under the nose to soothe rawness
  • A warm bath or heating pad to soothe aches and pains
  • Steam from a hot shower to help your child breathe more easily
  • Try sugar free vitamin C lozenges or zinc lozenges to soothe a sore throat and boost the immune system
  • Drink fluids
  • Gargle with warm salt water
