Symptoms

  Symptoms for hyperthyroidism begin slowly. They include:
  • Weight loss
  • Frequent sweating
  • Sleep disturbances or insomnia
  • Irritability/nervousness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Infrequent, scant menstrual periods 
  • Enlarged thyroid gland
  • Vision problems or bulging eyes
  • Heat sensitivity
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Osteoporosis, or weak, brittle bones
  • Hair loss
  • Increased bowel movements

Causes

There are many causes for hyperthyroidism. They are
  • Excessive iodine intake
  • Graves disease (accounts for most cases of hyperthyroidism)
  • Inflammation (thyroiditis) of the thyroid due to viral infections or other causes
  • Noncancerous growths of the thyroid gland or pituitary gland
  • Abnormal secretion of TSH
  • Taking large amounts of thyroid hormone
