Otitis Externa: Symptom and Causes

Symptoms

  • Ear pain
  • A feeling of pressure or fullness in the ear
  • Redness or swelling (inflammation) of your outer ear or ear canal
  • Scaly skin in and out of ear which may peel off
  • Discharge from you ear which can be either water or pus like
  • Itching and irritation in and around the ear canal
  • Swollen and sore glands in the throat
  • Hearing loss
  • Pimple or boil in the ear canal

Causes

There are several different causes of otitis externa and number of things that make it more likely to occur.
  • Causes of localized OE- A hair follicle (root) become infected, usually by Staphylococcus aureus, a type of bacterium.
  • Causes of acute and chronic OE- These are due to bacterial and fungal infection.
Other causes
  • Excessive moisture (humid)
  • Absence of cerumen (waxy substance)
  • Allergic and skin diseases
  • Incomplete treatment of acute OE may lead to chronic OE.
  • Use of cotton swabs, hearing aids (ear phones) and other objects.
  • Putting fingers in the ear
  • Weak immunity (poor resistance to microorganisms)
  • Retained water level in the ear, which provides moist environment for the microorganisms to replicate and make condition severe
  • Swimming in polluted water or area
