PAREGORIC

Overview

PAREGORIC is a Schedule H1 drug.
Paregoric is an opioid, sometimes called a narcotic. Opium is derived from the seed pod of a poppy plant. It works by increasing smooth muscle tone and decreasing fluid secretions in the intestines. This slows the movement of bowel matter through the intestines. Paregoric (sometimes called "opium tincture") is used to treat diarrhea.

Precautions

Caution should be exercised in patients with history of head injury, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, liver or kidney problems, under active thyroid, asthma, Addison’s disease, stomach problems, inflammation of the pancreas, bowel or urinary obstruction, enlarged prostate, or blood disease, any allergy, who are taking other medications, elderly, children, during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It may cause dizziness or drowsiness, do not drive a car or operate machinery and sit or stand up slowly while taking this medication. Avoid alcohol consumption.

Symptoms of Overdosage

PAREGORIC over-dosage can result in: Slow Or Irregular Breathing, Slow Heart Rate (pulse), Drowsiness, Weakness (generalized), Fainting
